Organ led instrumental funk band The Getup were formed in 2005 by Hammond player Mark Ashfield. A student of Acid Jazz Hammond legend James Taylor, Mark sought some like minded musicians to let out his tonewheel urges, and in 2005 met up with a guitar playing friend and drummer from the north of England and promptly wrote and recorded Nelson Street. Unable to find a suitable bass player at the time, Mark played bass on organ.
More tunes quickly followed, but with Mark living 200 miles south practicalities got in the way and he embarked on the search for a new, more local lineup. After providing the Hammond for a series of Gene Drayton Unit gigs, he teamed up with the Drayton's drummer Mark Claydon, guitarist Clinton Hough, and Mark C brought Ian Stevens into the band on bass. The current London based lineup was complete!
Mark C And Clint brought a whole new dimension to the sound, both being respected session musicians and teachers well known in funk and jazz circles. Indeed, Mark Claydon's CV reads like a who's who of the London scene, with many album appearances on both drums and percussion to his credit. He also has endorsements with Premier drums and Bosphorus cymbals. Mark Ashfield has been a Hammond freak for as long as he can remember and, as well as playing the things, he also restores and hires them. His Hammond hire and service credentials include work for The Blockheads, New Mastersounds, JTQ, Stoned Soul Picnic, Vinylizor Productions, Mother Earth, Speedometer and Reverend Cleatus & The Soul Saviours.
After some intensive rehearsals in the latter quarter of 2006 the first gigs came in quickly, and we also featured on Cambridge based 209 Radio's Casserole Funk & Soul Show. The recording of the EP took place in Terminal Studios under the shadow of Tower Bridge in London, with a couple of live tracks (Brand New You and Where's Wonkie?) later recorded at the bands rehearsal studio in Greenwich. The self-produced EP was quickly featured on the Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show on BBC 6 Music and, after a launch gig at London's legendary 100 Club, sold out within two weeks.
The band are currently in the studio working on a single for vinyl release in the new year, as well as recording more original tracks for their debut album 'Life At Cafe Eric'. The new album, whilst retaining the Hammond heavy sound the band are becoming known for, will also feature guest musicians on flute, trumpet and trombone, as well as a soulful vocal or two!
